Photographers - how often do you set aside time to take photographs with no purpose or final outcome in mind—other than the pure joy of creating? I really struggle to invest time and energy into personal artistic pursuits. With a never ending list of tasks to be done to run my business, grow my brand, and push me forward towards more jobs, I often find myself lost in the hustle, losing site of the art that should be at the center of my photography. It’s a balancing act—one that I am continually working to calibrate. It is important to invest in yourself; to carve out time and energy; to nurture your artistic voice by taking risks, pushing boundaries, and allowing yourself to create just for the sake of creating. When you do take that time, you create opportunities for growth, fresh inspiration, new perspective, and in some cases, it even helps elevate your brand and propel your business forward. This image is from a recent collaborative shoot with the amazing @benjaminholtrop. I brought only black & white film, and forced myself to think outside the box, stretching beyond the boundaries of my normal approach and style. We weren't shooting for a brand, a client, or any purpose other than 'just because,' and it's easily become one of my favorite projects to-date. This was an investment of time and money for everyone involved, but we all walked away as more fulfilled and inspired artists. You can't put a price tag on that.
