Down on Manhattan's artfully cool and gritty Lower East Side, jeweler Anna Sheffield is just a few days past a big Valentine's Day rush and already she's on to Spring.

There are three things front of mind for the season of sun, emergence, and growth; one has to do with balance, one has to do with signature earring styles, and one is about Sheffield's very heritage and spirituality as a designer, and the lineage of Four Corners region artists she so reveres.

Anna told our buyers, Raul Becerra and Sarah Anderson, that she's emphasizing a mix of high and low, hard and soft-particularly with rings, but with all her pieces, really. This means mixing silver and gold, precious with semi-precious, and creating a more dynamic relationship within the elevated wonder of fine jewelry. At SPACE in the coming seasons, you'll see this with diamonds and sapphires next to moonstones and quartzes.

The coolest earring pairs in Anna's world aren't pairs at all but sets where one piece is larger and more ornate, and the other is a sort of elaborate stud. Think of it as the fine jewelry way to do the mix-matched earring trend.

Anna's also really into earring "jackets," which is another way to rethink what a pair is all about. She's crafting sets of studs and jeweled rings that can be traded in and out so that the single stones can nestle and re-nestle into different circles of gems.

Not long ago, Anna announced the Heritage Project on her blog, telling fans and friends about the sacred places and ancient techniques that mean so much to her own process as an artist. Utilizing turquoise, silver, and traditional motifs, these pieces were initially sold only at her downtown flagship, but next Fall we'll have them at SPACE as well.
