Origami Filled Retro Vintage Feel Autumn Wedding - Whimsical...

I'd so love to see more couple's choosing Autumnal nuptials. Crisp sunny days, beautiful light and rich colours make for a beautiful backdrop.

WWW readers Matthew and Emma chose to marry on the 1st November 2014 in beautiful Yorkshire. There was a really unique and fresh approach to their wedding planning. The focus being on personal touches and locally sourced food.

With a honeymoon booked to Japan, origami took over the wonderful décor, there were colourful blooms teamed with succulents and even a canal boat trip.

Emma had an amazing 1960s/retro bridal look, with an original vintage dress and some amazing Orla Kiely heels from Clarks.

Thanks so very much to James & Lianne for sharing these wonderful images with us.

THE PROPOSAL | Matthew and Emma celebrated their 10th anniversary in November 2013. They got engaged in February 2014 in their favourite place: Saltaire, near Bradford. Matthew proposed by the statue of the alpacas in Robert's Park with a handmade Kate Smith engagement ring.

THE VISION | Emma had always wanted an Autumn wedding. They met in Autumn 2003 whilst at university. Autumnal colours: reds, golds, yellows were the initial colour scheme and the palette they chose for their wedding flowers.

Having already booked their honeymoon to Japan, origami was a focus for the room décor. Emma folded 1000 paper cranes between March and October and hung them in strings of 5 across the ceilings of the Standedge Tunnel Visitor Centre. Matthew's Auntie Naomi [who is Japanese] made beautiful giant origami water lilies for the table centres and lilies in baskets to decorate the top table.

The invitations were an origami magic box design [a number of their guests confessed to only finding further details inside just before the wedding!] And the Orders of Service featured origami hearts.

Emma and Matthew wanted a rustic wedding with personal touches. From the locally-sourced food, desserts and ale, to arriving in a canal boat in the Colne Valley where they have chosen to settle.

THE PLANNING PROCESS | As Matthew admitted in his speech, this was largely all down to Emma; from the 1000 cranes, to the table of cakes at the reception. Lots of emails and meetings were had with various local suppliers. Emma kept a scrapbook of ideas and created a photo book of the planning from their engagement in February to the wedding in November.

BUDGET | Matthew and Emma didn't really have a budget, but never wanted a fancy, showy wedding with unnecessary 'gimmicks'. A homely, down-to-earth wedding was more important. Making a lot of the arrangements, decorations, invitations etc. themselves saved a lot of money along the way and made the day more personal and unique.

THE VENUE | During February half term, Emma discovered that it was possible to hire the Thomas Bourne room at the Standedge Tunnel Visitor Centre. The staff there were incredibly helpful and extremely friendly, offering plenty of opportunities for visiting to plan how the room might look. Emma and Matthew thoroughly enjoyed having a blank canvas to transform. Family and friends with young children could enjoy the outdoor adventure playground and soft play area while our older guests found out about the history of the longest tunnel in Britain!

Matthew and Emma wanted to get married at St. Bartholomew's Church in Marsden because it was the first place they visited when they began to think that they would like to move to the Colne Valley in 2011. The people there have made them feel so welcome and they have continued to attend since! Geoff, the vicar, put them both completely at ease before, during and after the wedding. Little asides made the ceremony even more memorable and enjoyable!

THE DRESS & ACCESSORIES | A 1960's vintage 100% silk dress in ivory and gold.

FINDING THE DRESS | Emma had been looking at different styles but always knew that she wanted long sleeves - and not a white dress! She wanted something unique and when she came across Vintage Lane Bridal Boutique, she saw a picture of a beautiful dress that was just 'her'. She went to The Last Drop Village in Bolton one weekend at the beginning of April with her mum and tried on the dress she had seen. It was a perfect fit! It was exactly what she imagined she would wear. It didn't cost thousands, or even hundreds, of pounds yet she received so many comments and felt so comfortable. All of the dresses at Vintage Lane are one of a kind and genuine vintage from 1930s -1980s. Sybil, who owns the boutique, made Emma and her mum feel completely at ease. There was no rush and Emma was encouraged to try on lots of different styles and designs from different eras to help her to make her decision.

Emma's engagement ring was handmade by Kate Smith. Emma had seen her collection at Salt's Mill in Saltaire. Matthew and Emma then visited Kate at her workshop in the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham where they discussed the designs for their wedding rings. Emma also had bespoke earrings made to match which were a gift from her mum & dad for her 30th birthday.

Emma found some fantastic Orla Kiely shoes at Clarks that went surprisingly well with the dress! And, although they had 12cm heels, were very comfy to wear! [Especially for someone who doesn't do heels!]

GROOM'S ATTIRE | Matthew wore a quirky Ted Baker suit with waistcoat with a spectacular lining [which he couldn't resist showing off to the photographers!] He ordered matching ties for family members from Duchamp and wore Duchamp fox cufflinks.

THE READINGS & MUSIC | As well as completing a degree in music and Masters in Composition at university, Emma also spent years singing at church weddings as a child in the church choir. Choosing music to walk down the aisle was one of the hardest decisions she had to make! After hours of listening to pieces of music, she finally chose Handel's Overture for the Royal Fireworks. For the Recessional, Handel's Hornpipe from The Water Music. During the signing of the registers, Emma chose Cantique de Jean Racine by Faure.
Matthew's sister, Catherine, read 1 Corinthians 13 beautifully.

BEAUTIFUL BRIDESMAIDS | Emma had just one bridesmaid. Matthew's cousin Sakura. She was 10 a few weeks after the wedding - the perfect age for a bridesmaid! She looked beautiful in a dress that really complimented Emma's wedding dress. She had a smaller version of Emma's bouquet - made of succulents and kalencoe.

THE FLOWERS | When Emma and Matthew first visited Roxanne at Lily Blossom in Marsden, they admitted that they didn't really have a clue! After months of discovering the joys of Pinterest, becoming experts in succulents and establishing what they actually wanted, they couldn't have been happier with the flowers Roxanne delivered on the morning of the wedding. They were perfect. So unusual, yet exactly what they had imagined. Emma's bouquet featured a range of succulents, 'succession' pincushions, red hypericum berries, and foliage. For buttonholes: small succulents, hypericum berries and rosemary [Matthew's favourite herb] The pew ends were the same, which Roxanne then transferred to the visitor centre to decorate the pillars there. The succulents all still had their roots so Emma and Matthew have been able to plant them as a lasting reminder in the garden of their new home.

As extra table decorations, Matthew bought tiny succulents in miniature terracotta pots from 'The Curious Plant Company'.

THE CAKE | A keen baker herself, but not an expert in fruitcake, Emma asked her mum to make the wedding cake! She makes a fantastic Christmas cake and Emma wanted something that looked 'rustic' to go with the food and the setting for the wedding reception. Roxanne at Lily Blossom provided succulents for decoration and it was topped it off with a Lego bride and groom!

YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER | When Emma came across images of a wedding James & Lianne photographed in Marsden, at the Standedge Tunnel, she knew that what she wanted was exactly the same style of photography. Photographs that would capture the day and would capture their family and friends as they are, without them realising! And that is exactly what they did. The weather was perfect. A crisp, clear blue sky, autumnal morning; James and Lianne captured the colours of the leaves beautifully. They were never intrusive, never asked our guests to pose [or us for that matter]. Emma and Matthew felt that it was the most important decision they made and so many of their friends - and friends of family members - are still complementing them on having images of such fantastic quality and skill.

THE DETAILS & DÉCOR | Food: Having heard that The Rose & Crown, Cop Hill, Slaithwaite had catered for weddings at the Standedge Tunnel Visitor Centre before, but knowing that hot food would be needed for November, Emma contacted Steve - the owner of The Pennine Dining Group. Emma and Matthew are both vegetarian and wanted the wonderful cheese and onion pie that they had tasted up at the pub. Their guests are STILL talking about the size of the slices of pie!

The desserts were handmade orange and chocolate semifreddo made at the Vanilla Bean Café in Slaithwaite. Eric, the gelato expert at Freddo Blu, makes the most beautiful, bespoke desserts for weddings. It is also possible to hire an ice cream bike for summer weddings!

Having visited the Saltaire Beer Festival in September, Matthew and Emma hired kegs of Madagascan ale from Saltaire Brewery. A pale, hoppy beer full of tropical fruit flavours and aromas including guava and pineapple - which went down very well with their guests! They hired hand pumps from a lovely man in Keighley at Collin Farrar Brewery Supplies.

Throughout the 9 months of planning, Emma's dad kept suggesting that she might like to arrive in a posh car. It was never something she had thought of, but then she came across Leary's of Lindley. Emma said that when she saw the Larch Green 1976 Silver Shadow I Rolls Royce, she realised how exciting it would be to arrive in such a beautiful car. Mark, the chauffeur, was courteous, relaxed and clearly enjoyed every moment himself!

The Marsden Shuttle, booked through the Huddersfield Canal Society, is crewed by volunteers. The volunteers on the wedding day had decorated the boat beautifully with bunting and balloons. Emma and Matthew enjoyed a relaxing boat ride, reflecting on the ceremony, before arriving to greet their guests at the Standedge Tunnel. Their guests were then offered boat rides too!

THE HONEYMOON | Emma and Matthew have booked a trip to Japan for 2 weeks in August 2015 [Emma is a primary school teacher so it needed to be during holiday time!]. They have arranged a tailor-made itinerary booked through Audley Travel to ensure that they could make the most of their visit - including staying in a range of accommodation and travelling around on the bullet train. Their honeymoon includes staying in a traditional Japanese Ryokan in Kyoto. They were able to create a wedding website which enabled guests to choose specific experiences for them to enjoy.

MEMORABLE MOMENTS | Geoff, the vicar, asking for people to make sure their phones were switched off - and Matthew getting his phone out of his jacket pocket, turning it off and handing it to his mum!

Mark, our lovely Chauffeur, offering to give our Ushers a ride in the Rolls Royce to the visitor centre. The highlight of their day!

Tony, our skipper on the Marsden Shuttle, offering to give rides to our guests after we arrived at the visitor centre! Even the grown-ups were fighting to have a ride!

Steve from The Rose & Crown shaking his head at the woeful attempts of pint-pulling!

At about 8pm, Emma and Matthew took their guests outside to share sparklers! Emma's brother captured the most fantastic photograph! It added an extra special moment to the day [being so close to Bonfire Night]

ADVICE FOR OTHER COUPLES | Just have the day YOU want. Don't go to any hideous wedding fayres. Buy wedding magazines if you have to [If only to help you to decide what you DON'T want!]
